1639 King James Bible Beautiful Antique Leather Binding with Bossing 

 


1639 King James Bible


Title: The Holy Bible: Containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly Translated out of the Originall Tongues: and with the former Translations diligently compared and revifed: By his Majefties fpeciall Commandment. Appointed to be read in churches.


Publisher: Printed at London by Robert Barker, Printer to the Kings Most Excellent Majeftie: And by the Affigns of John Bill.


Year: 1639


Family History: Elizabeth Miles born 7 Day of August 1707 and on verso of title page is recorded the ownership of “Thomas Miles his booke, God give him grace Theron to Looke” which appears to be dated 1711 and is followed by additional written notations of Thomas’s. NT is complete and is followed by a colophon reading, “London: Printed by Robert Barker, Printer to the Kings moft Excellent Majeftie: And by the Affignes of John Bill. Anno Dom. 1639.” Followed by a light brown ink birth record which is somewhat unclear. Ink inscriptions along several margins in Psalms section. “Thomas Pope, His Book, Anno Domini 1738_ 1738,” “Thomas Pope His Book 1739″ (with reverse image on opposite page).


Binding: Full-leather, recently rebound with original covers retained. New spine is raised with black/gilt title band reading “HOLY BIBLE 1639.” Leather somewhat crackled on covers but all still well-intact. Decorative tooled bossing on corners and centers of covers. Leather straps on page side have been replaced in period style and original metal clasp edges retained on covers.


Condition: Pencilled notations from former sellers on endpaper. Many pages a little rough at very edges and scattered bent corners, as well as varying degrees of browning/browned patches but only slight loss of text, most notably tiny holes in the center of a few spots on the last few leaves of the Metrical Psalms, and some corners on approximately 3-4 leaves among the Geneaology of Christ and the Apocrypha. Titles present. Text appears complete with good, well-intact binding. Some binding very slightly off at beginning of book, but still appears securely intact.


Preliminaries: “Of Ceremonies, Why Some Be Abolished, and Some Retained” which appears to discuss traditions of men vs. commands of God. Followed by Table and Kalender expressing the order of Psalms to be said at morning and evening prayer throughout the year and The Order How the Rest of the Holy Scriptures (besides the Psalms) is appointed to be read.


Other Preliminaries: Proper Lessons to be Read, Order of the Psalms to be Said at Morning and Evening Prayer, Almanack, Notes on the Kalendar, Rules to know when the terme beginneth and endeth, Order where morning and evening prayer shall be used and said. An Order for Morning Prayer daily throughout the year, An Order for Evening Prayer throughout the whole year (Letany), Collects, Order of the Administration of Communion, The Ministration of Baptifme (Baptism) to be ufed in the Church, Catechism, Confirmation, Form of Solemnization of Matrimonie, Order for the visitation of the sick, Communion of the Sick, Order for the Buriall of the Dead, Churching of Women, Commination against sinners, with certain prayers to be ufed divers times in the year, Psalms of David, Godly prayers, Genealogies (with title page). Genealogical title page reads, “The Genealogies recorded in the Sacred Scriptures, according to every family and tribe. With the line of ovr (our) Sauior Iesvs Christ, obferued from Adam to the bleffed Virgin Mary. By J.S. Cvm Privilegio. Anno Dom. 1638. Title has border at edges.


Text: General title present. Dedication to King James follows with Order of Books on verso. Small woodcut at top of first page of Genesis. Decorative woodcut initial letter at first chapter. Includes Apocrypha (untitled but woodcut at top of first page). The New Testament title page is present and reads, “The New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ: Newly Translated out of the Originall Greek….” Woodcut border depicting the Apostles surrounds title text.


Post-Text Material: Revelation is followed by “The Whole Book of Psalmes: Collected into Englifh Meeter by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others, conferred with the Hebrew, with apt notes to sing them withall. Set forth and allowed to be sung in all churches, of all the people together, before and after Morning and Evening prayer, and also before and after Sermons: & moreover in private houses for their godly solace and comfort, laying apart all ungodly songs and ballades which tend only to the nourishing of vice, and corrupting of youth….London, Printed by G.M. for the Companie of Stationers. Cum Privilegio Regis Regali. 1639.” Includes a godly prayer and a Table of Psalms and where to find them.
